Gerald Casale, of legendary New Wave group Devo, is starting a winery. He tells Billboard that his 50 By 50 Winery's initial offerings, a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Rosé, are about to drop.
And what wines, besides his own, naturally, does Casale enjoy? When it comes to Pinot Noir he highlights Oregon's Domaine Serene and Brick House, along with Merry Edwards' single vineyard California Pinots. And for rosé? Whispering Angel from Provence and Tuscany's Castello di Ama.
Casale's "aha!" wine epiphany came while on tour in the 1980s when a French promoter introduced him to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Who says concert promoters deserve a bad rap?
Concerning the allure of wine, Casale concludes, ""Wine is part of a ritual and to me, rituals keep anything of value in human society alive."
