Jon Bonné

Jon Bonné is the award-winning wine editor for the San Francisco Chronicle and is responsible for the paper’s wine and spirits content and the annual Top 100 Wines list. His work can also be found in top publications such as Saveur, Food & Wine, and The Art of Eating. In 2004 he founded the wine and food blog, Amuse-Bouche.net. Currently he writes a regular column for Decanter magazine and is the USA regional chair for the Decanter World Wine Awards.

 

BACKSTORY

Jon Bonné’s interest in wine began at a young age when he watched his father run a gourmet food and catering business. He started his career in journalism in 1996, soon after graduating from Columbia University. Before his position at the San Francisco Chronicle, Bonné was a lifestyle editor and wine columnist for MSNBC.com. He also worked as a wine columnist for Seattle magazine and has reported for the New York Times, Newsweek, Court TV, National Public Radio, and winesandvines.com.

Jon Bonné is the author of The New California Wine, described as the untold story of the California wine industry. The book tells the story of “the young, innovative producers who are rewriting the rules of contemporary winemaking; their quest to express the uniqueness of California terroir; and the continuing battle to move the state away from the overly technocratic, reactionary practices of its recent past.” In 2013, Bonné’s book was shortlisted for the Andre Simon awards for food and drink books.

PERSONAL

Bonné grew up in New York City and Pound Ridge, New York. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1990 and Columbia University in 1994. Currently he resides in San Francisco.

NO JOKE

Mr. Bonné’s work in wine and food journalism has earned him multiple awards, including two James Beard Foundation awards in 2007 and 2011 for his work at the San Francisco Chronicle. He has also received numerous honors from the Association of Food Journalists. Twice he has been shortlisted for the Beard award for best wine writing, including a piece written in 2010 for Saveur called “The New California Wine.” The article inspired his book of the same name.
