2013 En Primeur: Irreversible Damage to Bordeaux?

The bad news and bad publicity for the 2013 Bordeaux en primeur offerings keep coming. The propping up of this sub par vintage with marketing spin and arrogance when it comes to setting prices has most recently raised the hackles of The Secret Wine Merchant. This anonymous scribe of a column on Master of Wine Tim Atkin's website concludes:

"So, the message to the châteaux is this: consumers are not going to buy 2013s unless they are priced significantly lower than the cheapest available vintage on the market."

Here are three articles to provide some background showing there was little calm before the storm:

Harpers: 2013 Bordeaux en primeur is a "damp squib".

The Drinks Business: “It’s clear the Bordelais need to price this vintage to sell. They can’t compare themselves to any recent vintage. They must price to sell." -- Liv-ex Director Justin Gibbs

Wine Searcher: "The market doesn’t want or need 2013 Bordeaux." -- Tim Atkin MW
